Dealing with Emotions - Part 1

Human beings experience a wide variety of emotions each and every day. Over time, we learn to manage and deal with those emotions in different ways. But no one is born knowing how to deal with all the feelings they have each day. Part of our job as parents is to guide our kids through this process.

The good news is we are bigger than our emotions. Emotions are neither good nor bad, they just are; it's what we do with or because of our emotions that can be problematic.

We can help our kids by:
Naming their emotions - often this simple process will diffuse the force of an emotion
Acknowledge and validate what they are feeling - "It's okay to feel that way." "I understand it must be (frustrating, upsetting ...)
Correct and guide - "but it's never okay to (hit, punch, break things, etc.)"
Remind them that we are bigger than our emotions and God is bigger than EVERYTHING

Praise God, we are so much more than our thoughts and feelings and He gives us the tools to manage these things over and over again in His Word. 1 John 4 reminds us "Little children, you are from God and have overcome (these things) for greater is the One living inside of you than he who is living in the world."

The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us - we need only ask God for help and He will answer us. Remind kids that they can ask God for help and model how with simple prayers in your own words ("God, I'm so angry about this! Please help me!" "God, I'm sad, help me feel Your love for me." etc.)
